Hunt Gymnasium Listed in Georgia Register of Historic Places
Wednesday, June 9th, 2021
The Historic Henry Alexander Hunt Gymnasium in Fort Valley was listed in the Georgia Register of Historic Places on May 21, 2021. This approval prepares this historic site for National Register listing. According to the Georgia National Register staff:
"The H.A. Hunt Gymnasium property has passed the Georgia National Register Review Board and is now listed in the Georgia Register of Historic Places. The next step is for the Georgia National Register staff to prepare the nomination to be sent to the National Register of Historic Places in Washington, D.C."
Under the inspiration of Mrs. Evelyn Davis McCray and now-deceased, co-founder, Henry E. Bryant (former principal of Hunt High School), leaders of the Hunt Educational and Cultural Center, Inc. nonprofit (HECC) have worked several years to have the H A. Hunt Gymnasium recognized for its significance as an officially designated historic site.
This designation recognizes the Gym’s significance as embodying the history and spirit of Hunt High School, which served the Black community of Fort Valley and Peach County as a place of social, cultural, and educational development during the era of segregation. Saved from demolition in 1980 by a passionate group of former Huntonians and supporters, the Gymnasium and surrounding property were purchased from the city in 1987 and repurposed into a Center (HECC) for service to the community. Currently, the Gym serves the community as a place for meetings, family reunions, class reunions, holiday celebrations and community sports activities. The walking trail, adjacent to the Gym, provides a safe place for exercise for citizens of all ages. The stewards of this prized Gymnasium look forward to improving the historic site as it celebrates over 50 years of service to the Fort Valley community.
The Hunt Legacy Committee hopes the Gym will be approved for the National Register by the end of the year. This designation recognizes the historical, educational, and cultural significance of Henry A. Hunt High School. Adding the Gym to the Georgia Register also ensures that the history of this school will be remembered for the role it played in educating and motivating Black students during segregation.
The committee members are/were: Evelyn Davis McCray, Deloris Bryant-Booker, Martha Bright, Yvonne Beauford Oliver, Betty Porter, Beverly Delton, Elizabeth Miller, James Hammock, Ricky Jackson, and now deceased members Ruth Thompson, Cecil Porter, and Rhoda Miller Martin.
