Historic Macon's New Workshops Begin Saturday
Thursday, May 13th, 2021
Historic Macon will begin a series of workshops this Saturday and launch a tool library for the community soon afterward.
The first of the classes, called “Fingers and Toes,” will focus on tool safety and include hands-on practice. Brad Jamison, who teaches at Central Georgia Technical College, will teach the proper way to operate common construction tools, such as circular and miter saws. The session will run from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m.. Saturday. Space is still available, but you must register at www.historicmacon.org.
The wide-ranging classes, which will continue into the summer, will help homeowners and skilled workers alike. All of the sessions will be held at 909 Second St. Space for the classes is limited.
Both projects are part of Historic Macon’s trades-related initiatives, which also include hiring three preservation carpentry apprentices for a 10-week training program. These pilot programs are funded by a grant from the Watson-Brown Foundation.
“Day in and day out, our accomplishments at Historic Macon rely on proficient workers in a skilled trade," said Ethiel Garlington, Historic Macon's executive director. "This is a great chance to educate homeowners and professionals alike and help them become better.”
Beginning Tuesday, May 18, Historic Macon’s new tool library will provide an opportunity for Macon-Bibb County residents to borrow tools for their home-improvement projects, from saws and yard tools to pressure washers. Residents will have to set up an online account linked to a credit card before they can borrow a tool, but there will be no cost to do so.
On Saturday, May 22, from 10 to 11:30 a.m., Travis Spencer will lead Historic Macon’s second workshop, “Stile-ish Doors,” on how to refurbish both wooden and glass doors.
