Crews Celebrated as Part of National Public Works Week

Wednesday, May 19th, 2021

Macon-Bibb County will celebrate the crews in its Parks & Beautification, Public Works, & Solid Waste Departments as part of National Public Works Week, which is May 16-22 this year. The Parks & Beautification and Solid Waste Departments will host a breakfast for crews on Wednesday, May 19 at 7:30 a.m. and lunch on Thursday, May 20 at 12:00 p.m. at 327 Lower Poplar Street, and the Fire Department has agreed to cook the breakfast to help show their appreciation. The Public Works Department is hosting a lunch for its crews on Thursday, May 20, at 12:00 p.m. at 4520 Knight Road.

“The men and women in these departments have been on the front line of our Clean Street Matter campaign, all while still collecting regular yard waste, filling potholes, maintaining our parks, and so much more,” says Mayor Lester Miller. “They are at the very center of making our community a more beautiful place, and we should all take a moment to thank them for their tireless work and dedication.”

“I really appreciate the work our team does year-round,” says Director of Public Works Tim Wilder. “We do a lot of different things. At any given moment I have to call them to go do something else and they never have a problem with it. They work so hard.”

“This week is a time where we can celebrate and recognize the hard work our men and women have done that often goes unnoticed,” says Solid Waste Manager Maurice Jackson. “I just want to personally extend my gratitude and appreciation to all department employees that dedicate their time and hard work daily.”

“We are excited to celebrate public works week this year,” says Parks and Beautification Director Michael Glisson. “Between building new parks, grass mowing, tree removals, and illegal dump site clean ups our crews have been working very hard and they deserve a day to show how much our community appreciates their efforts.”

Since the Clean Streets Matter campaign began, Macon-Bibb crews have collected nearly 2.3 million pounds of debris and litter from 232 illegal dump sites, and the Macon Water Authority has removed more than 830,000 pounds of dirt and litter using their street sweepers. The community has joined in with the crews to help keep it clean by holding nearly 100 neighborhood cleanups that resulted in more than 109,000 pounds of litter and debris being picked up.
