Twin Lakes Library System rejoins Middle Georgia Regional Library System after 20 Years

Thursday, April 1st, 2021

The Twin Lakes Library System, will rejoin Middle Georgia Regional Library after nearly 20 years, effective July 1, 2021. At its largest, Middle Georgia Regional Library contained seven counties including Twin Lakes.  Twin Lakes withdrew from the region in 2001 and established the Twin Lakes Library System to primarily serve residents of Milledgeville and Baldwin County.

"We are delighted to have Twin Lakes rejoin the MGRL family and we remain committed to a seamless transition for everyone involved. This reunion will increase shared services, the input of public dollars, and renew established partnerships within these communities," said Sherri Goss, Chair of the Middle Georgia Regional Library Board of Trustees.

Middle Georgia Regional Library director Jennifer Lautzenheiser stated, “The merging of the Twin Lakes Library System into the Middle Georgia Regional Library means greater service to all of our locations. The economy of scale means we can maximize efficiencies in process of regional functions such as technical support, accounting, grant management, and materials management. The merger does not mean loss of local control. All of our libraries are governed by boards appointed by their local funding agencies.”

The interim director for Twin Lakes Library System, Stephen Whigham shared, "We went through a lengthy evaluation process before we made this decision. Middle Georgia Regional provided us with policies, practices, met our staff, and presented a structure that we felt would offer efficiency to all locations and we are excited about this new chapter."

All Twin Lakes staff will remain employed during this transition. Twin Lake Library cardholders will continue to have access to the same library services and materials such as e-books, audiobooks, magazines, etc.

In recent years it has become a statewide trend for smaller counties to rejoin larger systems to offer additional services and support within communities.

With this merger, Middle Georgia Regional Library will serve seven counties across central Georgia with 18 outlets.
