Open Streets Macon Announces Two New Dates/routes for 2021

Friday, April 2nd, 2021

Open Streets, a popular, community-driven initiative both nationally and internationally, temporarily closes streets to motorized vehicles, giving people the opportunity to walk, bike, exercise, get to know their neighbors, and enjoy Macon’s streets in new, creative ways.

Now in its sixth year, Bike Walk Macon will partner with two Macon neighborhoods to activate and transform two new Open Streets Macon routes in 2021:

SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 12 | NORTH HIGHLANDS | 2 TO 6 PM | 1 MILE

This route will begin at the Ocmulgee Heritage Trail entrance at Glenridge Drive and continue via Parkview Drive, Curry Drive, and Boulevard and end at Clinton Road. Nearby featured neighborhoods and points of interest connecting to this route include the Ocmulgee Heritage Trail, Shirley Hills neighborhood, and East Macon neighborhoods.

SUNDAY, OCTOBER 24 | NAPIER HEIGHTS | 2 TO 6 PM | .8 MILES

This route will follow Napier Avenue, beginning at Linden Avenue and ending at Pio Nono Avenue. Featured nearby neighborhoods and points of interest connecting to this route include Central High School, Miller Middle School, InTown Macon neighborhood, and Mercer University.

These neighborhoods were selected to host the 2021 routes due to the community’s overwhelming response to a nomination form released by Bike Walk Macon earlier this year.

“We’d like to especially thank Curtis Hertwig from the North Highlands neighborhood and Andrea Cooke and Anthony Braddock from the Napier Heights neighborhood for sharing their creative and passionate ideas with us for improving their neighborhoods through advocating for safer, friendlier streets. We’re thrilled to partner with them and other neighborhood champions to bring Open Streets to these neighborhoods for the first time,” said Koryn Young, Bike Walk Macon engagement coordinator.

Organized by Bike Walk Macon, Open Streets Macon is a car-free celebration of public space, bringing people of all ages, abilities, and backgrounds together to re-imagine how we use our public streets. Citizens are encouraged to bring their bicycles, strollers, skateboards, hula-hoops, and dogs to enjoy a variety of art, music, and wellness activities along the entire route. Residents in each community are invited to host a free activity of their choosing to show off their neighborhood’s personality and offerings.
