Friday, April 23rd, 2021

Dr. Carl Lane, a retired cardiothoracic surgeon, has been named the 2021 Hidden Hero Award winner by the Downtown Macon Rotary Club. The Hidden Hero Award recognizes unsung heroes in the community who go out of their way to help others.

A graduate of Yale School of Medicine, Dr. Lane retired after 46 years practicing medicine and has been active at the Macon Volunteer Clinic since 2011. He sees patients and mentors medical students and residents every Wednesday and Thursday morning at the free medical clinic on Rogers Avenue. In just the last two years, Dr. Lane has devoted more than 500 hours treating patients, many of whom suffer from chronic diseases such as diabetes and hypertension.

“We had many wonderful people nominated for the Hidden Hero Award from the community,” said Steve Bell, president of the Rotary Club of Downtown Macon. “Dr. Lane stands out for the decade of compassion and generosity he has given to working people at the Macon clinic.”

Nancy White, Executive Director of the Macon Volunteer Clinic, said, “Dr. Lane is an inspiration to our patients, medical students and clinical staff. Even after the COVID-19 shutdown last year, he was one of the first physicians to return to see patients every week.”

The Rotary club received nominations from the community of more than 30 individuals, couples and groups. The club will make a donation to Macon Volunteer Clinic on behalf of Dr. Lane.
