In March 2020, in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, Coliseum Medical Centers and Coliseum Northside Hospital temporarily suspended their volunteer program in order to limit the numbers of people inside the facility and most importantly, to protect the health and safety of the volunteers, many of whom are senior adults. Though the hospitals have been without these invaluable volunteers for over a year, that didn’t stop the hospital system from saying “thank you” to the dedicated individuals who have served there for years.
To celebrate National Volunteer Week, Coliseum Health System delivered flowers to each of their long-serving volunteers with a special invitation: to return to volunteer service in June 2021! Coliseum Medical Centers and Coliseum Northside Hospital will welcome back vaccinated adult volunteers beginning June 16, barring any excessive COVID-19 surges in our community.
Coliseum Health System’s Chief Executive Officer, Stephen J. Daugherty, said “Our volunteers are a valuable part of our Coliseum family. They have been eager to return, and so this announcement is as exciting for them as it is for us.”
Both Coliseum hospitals offered vaccinations to their senior volunteers earlier this year and nearly all of them received both doses of the COVID-19 vaccine.
Daugherty added, “Whether they realize it or not, our volunteers have continued to serve the hospital and their community even without stepping foot in our facilities this year. They sheltered in place, social distanced and wore masks as we worked to slow down the pandemic. When we asked them to consider getting vaccinated, they did. Their desire to serve the staff and patients of Coliseum never waned and for that, we are extremely grateful.”
If you are interested in becoming an adult volunteer at Coliseum Medical Centers or Coliseum Northside Hospital, applications for new volunteers will be accepted beginning June 1. For more information regarding the volunteer program, visit www.ColiseumHealthSystem.com.
