Open Streets Macon Returns Fall 2021, Announces Call for Street/Neighborhood Nominations
Wednesday, February 17th, 2021
Open Streets Macon, an initiative of Bike Walk Macon, invites Maconites to reclaim their public streets once again in fall 2021. The movement will close Macon-Bibb County streets to cars and open them to people as part of a greater initiative to create safer, more welcoming streets for pedestrians and bicyclists on Sundays, September 12 and October 24, 2021 from 2 to 6 pm.
This is the sixth consecutive year the local non-profit will host the program. Open Streets Macon began on College St. in 2016 and reached nearby Downtown neighborhoods each year until 2019. In 2020, Bike Walk Macon expanded the program’s reach to the East Macon, South Macon, and the Pleasant Hill neighborhoods. In 2021, Bike Walk Macon is asking Macon residents to select the next Open Streets Macon routes for them.
To nominate a street, community members are encouraged to complete a nomination form at www.openstreetsmacon.com/2021streetnomination. Nominated streets should be at least .5 to 1.5 miles in distance and located in Macon-Bibb County. The deadline to nominate is February 26, 2021.
Organized by Bike Walk Macon, Open Streets Macon is a car-free celebration of public space, bringing people of all ages, abilities, and backgrounds together to walk, skate, bike, play, and re-imagine how we use our public streets.
