Coliseum Medical Centers Turns 50

Today, Coliseum Medical Centers celebrated their 50th anniversary of providing hospital care to middle Georgia. On February 15, 1971, the facility opened as Coliseum Park Hospital, a 223-bed hospital that was built by HCA Healthcare. Today, Coliseum Medical Centers is a 310-bed facility offering 24-hour emergency care, diagnostic services, inpatient and outpatient surgery options, rehabilitation program and behavioral health. In addition, Coliseum Medical Centers’ services include advanced heart care, birthing services, and a level III neonatal nursery.
On the day that the hospital opened, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution wrote, “The four-story Coliseum Park Hospital constructed at a cost of $7 million by Hospital Corporation of America in Nashville, was scheduled to begin admitting patients this week in Macon.” Additionally, the article went on the point out that the hospital rooms offered color television and a telephone.

Timeline of Coliseum Medical Centers:
· 1971 – Coliseum Park Hospital opened
· 1973 - Obstetric and nursery unit was added
· 1990 – Coliseum Park Hospital changes name to Coliseum Medical Centers
· 1998 - Coliseum Medical Centers, Coliseum Psychiatric Center, Macon Northside Hospital and Middle Georgia Hospital merge to become Coliseum Health System
· 2002 – Coliseum Cancer Center opens
· 2003 – Opened Heart Program
· 2005 - Macon Northside Hospital’s name was changed to Coliseum Northside Hospital to reflect the affiliation with Coliseum Health System
· 2009 - Added robotic surgery
· 2011 - Changed name of Coliseum Psychiatric Center to Coliseum Center for Behavioral Health
· 2016 - Launched GME program
· 2017 - Added helipad
