COPD Awareness Month Takes on New Meaning During COVID-19
Wednesday, November 11th, 2020
COVID-19 has put lung health front and center. The term pre-existing condition has taken on new meaning during this pandemic, and patients with impaired lung functions know this better than anyone.
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is the fourth leading cause of death in the United States according to the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention. More than 16.4 million people have been diagnosed with COPD but millions more may have the disease without even knowing it. COPD is a long-term lung disease that makes it hard to breathe and includes chronic bronchitis and emphysema. Symptoms look different for everyone but many suffer with a chronic cough or multiple respiratory infections.
“With COVID-19, there is an increased spotlight on symptoms relating to shortness of breath,” says Dr. John Shivdat, medical director of emergency medicine at Coliseum Medical Centers. “Someone with COPD is definitely more at risk for complications and severe symptoms if they catch COVID-19. If you are having difficulty breathing for any reason, come to your closest emergency room or call 911.”
Most patients are able to manage their COPD through medications, oxygen therapy, pulmonary rehabilitation and social support. But experts like Dr. Ralph Griffin, medical director of emergency medicine at Coliseum Northside Hospital, agree the best thing is to take preventative action.
“First and foremost - if you smoke, stop,” notes Dr. Griffin. “Avoid second hand smoke, long-term exposure to air pollution or fumes and chemicals at home or at work.”
Other tips for patients during this time are to make sure they wash their hands and use hand sanitizer, avoid crowds during this COVID and flu season.
“I would encourage them to go a step further and ask family members to be considerate when they visit and make sure they only come by if they are healthy and if they take precautions to avoid COVID-19 in their daily routines,” added Dr. Griffin.
