Radiology Associates of Macon to Offer Latest Molecular Breast Imaging Technology
Friday, September 25th, 2020
Radiology Associates of Macon is excited to announce the addition of Molecular Breast Imaging technology to improve breast cancer detection. This molecular breast imaging (MBI) technology makes it possible to detect breast cancer in women considered to be at high risk, especially those with dense breast tissue.
In addition to patients with dense breast tissue, MBI may benefit women with:
-
Increased risk of breast cancer but unable to undergo MRI (due to claustrophobia or implanted devices that preclude an MRI)
-
Persistent breast pain or palpable finding, but mammograms with no abnormality
-
Breast implants
To provide the most advanced diagnostic tools for patients, Radiology Associates has acquired the Discovery NM750b from Dilon Technologies Inc, a world leader in molecular imaging.
“We are thrilled to be able to bring Molecular Breast Imaging to Central Georgia. This new technology will be a valuable asset in our armamentarium for the evaluation of breast disease and a game changer for additional screening of women with dense breasts,” said Dr. Carol Collings, Director of Breast Imaging at Radiology Associates of Macon.
MBI exams are similar to mammograms but the compression is about 30 percent less, so patients experience less discomfort during the exam. In addition, patients are able to sit comfortably during the procedure. Patients undergoing MBI are given an injection of a short-lived radioactive tracer agent, like those used in cardiac stress testing, which accumulates in the tumor cells and shows up as hot spots in the resulting images. The gamma camera used in MBI differentiates between tumors and dense breast tissue, unlike the X-ray used in mammographic imaging.
The imaging experts at Radiology Associates of Macon recognize the importance of early detection of breast cancer and the addition of MBI continues their commitment to offer the latest in diagnostic imaging technology.
