Fifteen Middle Georgia musicians have shared over $10,000 from the relief effort called “Play It Forward,” sponsored by Jazz Association of Macon (JAM) and 478 Sings United, a social media campaign of United Way of Central Georgia. The fund was launched in early May to support area musicians suffering economic hardship caused by COVID-19.

JAM and United Way have matched donations made by individuals and businesses. Musicians applied for relief by May 31 on JAM’s web page at maconjazz.org/musicianresources.

Here are some of the words of appreciation from musicians:

“I could only shed tears of gratitude and joy over your kindness and generosity. You made my list of worries grow a little shorter.”

“What a difference you have made in my life. It has been hard on lots of musicians.”

“Thank you for an act of kindness that was so much needed. You have made my life easier during this pandemic.”

JAM Board Chairman Neil Rigole said, “In this extraordinary time, community organizations are stepping forward to help those in need. As part of this community for over 30 years, JAM knows many musicians are struggling because their playing opportunities have evaporated. ‘Play It Forward’ is our way of thanking those people who enrich our lives through music.”

George McCanless, President and CEO of United Way of Central Georgia, said, “There was such enormous support for 478 Sings United, which proves how passionate so many people are about music during this time of social isolation. We were glad to support Jazz Association of Macon in matching donations for struggling musicians.”
