Bibb County School District VIP Academy and Remote Learning Option
Thursday, June 25th, 2020
The Bibb County School District is making remote options available for both current students and Bibb County children who are not currently enrolled in the District. Information about both programs is available on the District’s website at www.bcsdk12.net.
A June survey seeking feedback about COVID-19 was completed by 3,703 parents and showed that options for virtual learning ranked as a high priority for parents. For this reason, the District will offer a Remote Learning Option for 2020- 2021. This will be an option for families who would like their child to receive instruction from home. Under this model, students in grades K-12 will be taught virtually by a Bibb County School District teacher. Families who choose this option will be required to have internet access at home. A limited number of electronic devices will be available for checkout from the District upon request, and parents may find a list of requirements for electronic devices on the District’s website to help them identify whether or not their home computer will be appropriate or if they will need to request a device from the District. Additionally, families considering Remote Learning should be aware this option requires a commitment of at least one semester. A parent must register his/her child for the Remote Learning Option from June 23-July 8. A parent letter outlining the Remote Learning Option and the application are available at www.bcsdk12.net/remote.
Any student in the District who is not registered for Remote Learning by July 8 will be identified as participating in the District’s instructional plan for the 2020-2021 school year. The District is currently working to identify various models of instruction for 2020-2021 based on levels of community spread, which shall be designated by the Department of Public Health. The models will outline District operations and instruction for each of the following community scenarios: high spread, moderate spread and low spread. A plan for these models will be presented to the Bibb County Board of Education for review in July.
The District also is launching the VIP Academy for students in grades 6-12 who are currently homeschooled or enrolled in schools outside of the District. Classes will be offered online through Edgenuity. Through the VIP Academy, students who may have previously been homeschooled would now be eligible for District extracurriculars, such as athletics and music programs at their zoned schools, as well as the career pathway courses at W.S. Hutchings College and Career Academy for high school students. This program will be limited to 100 students in its pilot year. The application for this program is available at www.bcsdk12.net/vipacademy.
