Campus Garden to Feed Locals

For the past several years, Mount de Sales has used its campus garden to serve multiple purposes. Students maintain the garden, learning about soil nutrients and rejuvenation, composting practices, and prime planting and harvesting seasons throughout the year. The garden is rich with crops each season, including lettuces, sweet potatoes, peppers, tomatoes, and collards. The MDS cafeteria manager routinely incorporates fresh fruits, vegetables, and a variety of herbs into school lunches for hundreds of students. Food waste is used for composting so carbon and nutrients produced on campus stay on campus.

With students away and the campus temporarily closed, a new opportunity to use the garden for a good cause was conceived by MDS neighbor Darrie Schlessinger. Schlessinger is mobilizing volunteers to plant food for those in need. They have cleaned up the raised beds and started planting new crops. MDS counts among its neighbors doctors and medical residents, a Mercer professor who works on establishing rural medical clinics, two hospital pharmacists, and ministers that work on food distribution programs for those with food insecurity and many other contributors to the community. MDS is appreciative of neighbors' efforts to help those in need.
