Macon-Bibb Recreation Offering Online Programming
Staff Report From Middle Georgia CEO
Thursday, March 26th, 2020
Since the recreation centers closed on Monday, March 16, the Macon-Bibb County Recreation Department has considered how they could continue to provide services to the community without bringing them together physically. On March 23, they started testing online health and wellness classes through Facebook, beginning with a Morning Chair Exercise led by the Elaine H. Lucas Senior Center
“Our motto is ‘Building healthy communities through people, parks, and programs,’ and our community can benefit from our programs now more than ever,” says Recreation Department Director Robert Walker. “Our children are at home, parents are trying to work while teaching them, people are worried about and stressed over what the future holds…and we believe we can help alleviate the stress by providing these health and wellness classes.
Each day, there will be a live broadcast about 11:00 a.m. and a pre-recorded video posted about 3:00 p.m. from an individual recreation center. A new schedule will be released each week for people to pick which they’d like to attend, and all videos will be available for later viewing on the respective pages. (Times are subject to change.)
“We can support our community by helping protect the health of our community and employees, all while providing the services so many people rely on, and I want to commend the Recreation Department for finding a way to reach out to people with this valuable service,” says County Manager Dr. Keith Moffett. “Join us as we come together through health and wellness, even if we’re not physically close.”
