Lt. Governor Geoff Duncan praised the efforts of Senator William Ligon and  Senator John F. Kennedy for the passage of SB 123, which will protect Georgians by making it more difficult to dispose of coal ash in Georgia.  

“Because of the tireless work of Senator William Ligon, this critical legislation moved one step closer to the finish line,” said Lt. Governor Geoff Duncan.

SB 123, sponsored by Senator William Ligon, increases the surcharges on coal combustion in solid waste disposal facilities. The surcharges would raise from $1.00 to $2.50, which will help deter and reduce coal ash imports. This increase would also match the charges placed on solid waste in state landfills.

“Thanks in large part to Sen. John F. Kennedy’s efforts, Senate Bill 123 passed the Senate today,” said Lt. Governor Geoff Duncan. “Sen. Kennedy took an aggressive and bold stand for his constituents by ensuring that SB 123 made it to the Senate floor.”

Senate Bill 123 passed the Georgia Senate by a vote of 52-2.
