The 20th Annual “Lights on Afterschool” is a nationwide event that brings attention to the importance of quality afterschool programs for children. Evidence shows improvement in academic achievement, behavior and attendance among children who participate in afterschool programs. Research has also found a connection between after school activities and increased parental involvement. Across the country on October 24th, millions of people from various organizations including United Way of Central Georgia Program Partners are expected to participate in “Lights on Afterschool” with events like fairs, open houses, and special events.

A recent study by America After 3pm found that afterschool program participation has increased to about 10.2 million students nationwide, but that demand is much higher. For every child in an afterschool program today, there are two more waiting to get in with one in five children being unsupervised after the school day is over. Unmet demand is even higher in rural areas and communities with concentrated poverty found right here in central Georgia.

“Afterschool programs keep kids safe and continue the learning environment while giving working parents peace of mind,” said Sylvia McGee, United Way of Central Georgia Project Director. “Getting the word out about the great programs we have is essential to growth. Three of UWCG’s Program Partners are afterschool programs: Men About Change, Boys and Girls Club, and Campus Clubs. All three will be involved with Lights on Afterschool and help prepare our youth for success in school and life.”

United Way of Central Georgia, alongside Bibb County School District, will host a press conference at 4:00 pm on Wednesday, 10/16 at Matilda Hartley Elementary School in Macon to highlight the importance of afterschool programs and the upcoming “Lights on Afterschool” events happening in Macon on October 24th.  Macon’s Mayor Robert Reichert is expected to make a proclamation for “Lights on Afterschool” at the press conference on Oct. 16th and area afterschool programs will be present as well.
