Two Middle Georgia Broadcasters Inducted In Georgia Radio Hall of Fame
Staff Report From Middle Georgia CEO
Tuesday, October 29th, 2019
Middle Georgia Broadcaster MaryTherese Grabowski Griffin and Macon native Gary Guntor were inducted into the Georgia Radio Hall of Fame, during its 13th annual induction banquet on Saturday evening in LaGrange. Griffin is one of nine Career Achievement inductees in the class of 2019, while Guntor was inducted posthumously in the Legacy category.
Griffin, who was always known on the air by her first name, started her radio career on the overnight shift, in 1988 at WAYS-FM in Macon. At the same time she was pursuing a communications degree at Wesleyan College. Before becoming a top-rated news anchor/reporter at WMAZ-TV, MaryTherese also co-hosted a morning show with Don King on WMAZ-AM, and served as an account executive for both radio stations.
When local personality radio returned to Macon in 2016 with The Fox Classic Hits Network, MaryTherese became news director/morning local news anchor on this group of stations. Even while living in suburban Washington, D.C., and later suburban Atlanta, MaryTherese was able to provide a daily local news product, delivered by a well-known broadcast personality. Though she had been away from Middle Georgia for a few years, her connections with local organizations, and especially Robins Air Force Base, were quickly re-established.
Macon-born Gary Guntor started his radio career at the age of 14, when he operated a small neighborhood radio station from his bedroom. He later developed the technology to conduct live remote broadcasts from the neighborhood Handy Andy convenience store.
While he was a student at Lanier High School and later Macon Junior College, Guntor worked as a staff announcer at WMAZ-AM-FM. When he moved to Atlanta to pursue a business degree at Georgia State University, Guntor became part of the announcing staff at Georgia’s first radio station, WSB-AM. He later used his extensive broadcast experience to work in corporate communications for Georgia Power and The Southern Company.
Griffin and Guntor join 26 other broadcasters with Middle Georgia connections as inductees in the Georgia Radio Hall of Fame. The organization has been in existence since 2007. In addition to its late-October induction every year, the hall of fame operates the Georgia Radio Museum at 714 Lincoln St. in LaGrange.
