The Jazz Association of Macon (JAM) announced the Marc Whitten Memorial Music Scholarship in memory of the Macon musician who suffered from Crohn’s disease and died in 2018 at the age of 44. The scholarship is for area middle and high school and college students who demonstrate a love for and commitment to music through their school band or chorus. Scholarships will be awarded to students for musical instruments or equipment, lessons or study at summer camps.

Students from Bibb, Jones, Monroe and Houston may download the application form with details at the Jazz Association of Macon website (www.maconjazz.org/scholarship) or write to JAM at [email protected].

Deadlines to apply for the Whitten Scholarship are November 30 for the fall semester and March 31 for the spring semester.

“We created this scholarship as a tribute to Marc’s love of music and music education,” said Whitten’s parents, Rick and Sue. “Our goals are to help recipients enhance their understanding and appreciation of music and to honor the short life of Marc Whitten.”

The Whitten Scholarship is the latest addition to scholarships available from JAM. Other scholarships include:

-          The Bob Barnette Memorial Music Scholarship for middle school and high school students (deadline March 31)

-          The Young Jazz Musician Scholarship for high school seniors or first-year college students (deadline March 31)
