The Macon Homeless Coalition is partnering with the VA for the 2019 Macon Homeless Stand Down October 25, 2019 at Daybreak from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The original Stand Down for homeless veterans was modeled after the Stand Down concept used during the Vietnam War to provide a safe retreat for units returning from combat operations. At secure base camp areas, troops could take care of personal hygiene, get clean uniforms, enjoy warm meals, receive medical and dental care, mail and receive letters and enjoy the camaraderie of friends in a safe environment. Stand Down afforded battle-weary soldiers the opportunity to renew their spirit, health and overall sense of well-being.
Often the first access points for veterans experiencing homelessness, Stand Downs were created to provide the services that match these unmet needs on the local level. From tangible goods—including sleeping bags, socks, personal care items and boots—to services—including haircuts, dental care and health screenings—Stand Downs strive to connect veterans to essential items and services that are delivered by the people who know these veterans best: service providers in the community.
The homeless of our community - both Veterans and Non Veterans - will leave this Stand Down not only armed with referrals, but empathy and realistic support that can spark a new beginning in a homeless veteran’s life.
