Thursday, April 25th, 2019
Coliseum Medical Centers is proud to announce the addition of an Emergency Medicine Residency Program. The Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education Institutional Review Committee has granted initial accreditation for Coliseum Medical Centers to provide emergency medicine residency opportunities to medical school graduates beginning in July 2019. The three-year emergency medicine residency program will train new doctors in all aspects of emergency medicine. The program will hire 10 residents the first year and will add 10 additional residents each year for a total of 30 emergency medicine residents. The emergency medicine residency program at Coliseum Medical Centers is one of only four in the State of Georgia and the only one outside of the Atlanta-area and Augusta.
Dr. Bryan Sleigh, Emergency Medicine Residency Program Director and Associate Designated Institutional Official for Graduate Medical Education at Coliseum Medical Centers, said, “As emergency departments see more and more patients, the demand for emergency medicine physicians is growing. We are excited that this new program will meet a need in our community and will add even more resources to serve the patients who seek emergency care at our hospital.”
The emergency medicine residency program will be the fourth residency training program offered by Coliseum since graduate medical education began in 2017. Coliseum currently has 40 resident physicians in the internal medicine, psychiatry and transitional year residency programs and will be expanding to 64 physicians in July 2019.
The hospital hopes to add a residency program in family practice with the goal of offering over 100 residency positions when the expansion is completed. Like the other graduate medical education programs offered at the hospital, the emergency medicine program will be enhanced through an academic affiliation with Mercer University’s School of Medicine.
