Macon-Bibb Garbage, Recycling, and Yard & Bulky Waste Collection Changes Begin Monday, November 5th

Staff Report From Middle Georgia CEO

Friday, November 2nd, 2018

Macon-Bibb County's Solid Waste Department and Advanced Disposal will hold a joint press conference on Thursday, November 1, at 10:00 a.m. in Central City Park by the Round Building to discuss details of the upcoming change in collection services. They will also display the best way to separate items (garbage, recycling, yard waste, and bulky waste) and to place them in front of your homes so they more quickly be collected.

Beginning November 5, 2018, garbage, recycling, yard waste, and bulky waste collection will change in Macon-Bibb County. Advanced Disposal Services (ADS) will be responsible for garbage and recycling, while Macon-Bibb’s Solid Waste Department will be responsible for yard and bulky waste.

Beginning late afternoon on November 2, people can go to http://sw.maconbibb.us for tips on placing items on the curb, and an interactive map on when different items will be collected. (Complete details about collection and who to contact with issues can be found by clicking here.)

“We wanted to make this change to better serve the public and streamline services,” says Solid Waste Director Kevin Barkley. “ADS can focus on collecting what is in the garbage and recycling cans, and we can focus on the piles of yard debris and other bulky items.”

“With garbage and recycling all headed to our landfill, it makes more sense – both from our operational needs and the community’s perspective – that we handle collections of both,” says ADS General Manager Jordan Scott. “And since it will be our trucks and crews handling the carts, it makes sense for us to maintain and replace them”

Days will not change for garbage and recycling collection, but yard waste collection will move to four days per week on alternative weeks. A day will not be specified due to the uncertainty in how much needs to be collected each week. By designating the week yard waste is to be collected, Solid Waste can make sure a route has all of its yard waste collected before moving to the next.

“For yard and bulky waste, we want people to put the piles out on the Sunday night of their collection week, and our crews will pick it up that week,” adds Barkley. “This gives us the flexibility to make sure everything is picked up, as opposed to trying to get to the end of a route in a set amount of time.”
