South Bibb Rec Center Phase II Groundbreaking Today

Staff Report From Middle Georgia CEO

Wednesday, October 24th, 2018

Macon-Bibb County will celebrate the start of construction on South Bibb Recreation Center’s (7035 Houston Road) second phase with a Groundbreaking Ceremony on Wednesday, October 24, at 10:00 a.m. The Ceremony will be broadcast live on Macon-Bibb County’s Facebook page.

The second phase will cost approximately $4.4 million and is being funded by the voter-approved Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax. It will include the construction of a playground, splash pads, multipurpose fields, more tennis courts, a tennis center, and more. Warren Associates was hired to complete the second phase, and they were the contractor on the first phase. The master plan for the Center and fields was created by Vaughn & Melton after three forums where people let Macon-Bibb know what type of facilities and programs they wanted built and have available.

“In just its first summer being open, the South Bibb Recreation Center has been immensely popular, and it’s been a joy to hear from people about how much they’ve enjoyed all it has to offer,” says District 7 Commissioner Scotty Shepherd. “This has been promised to people in this area for many years, and, thanks to them approving the most recent SPLOST, we can begin to finish building what they expect and deserve.”

The first phase of construction was completed earlier this year, and South Bibb Recreation Center officially opened to the public in May 2018. The $7,640,000 project was also funded by the SPLOST, and included a recreation center, baseball fields, a pool, pavilions, green space, concessions, and more. Recently, the Commission approved the purchase and installation of field lights. The design was created after three forums where the public could let Macon-Bibb know what type of facilities and programs would be built and available.
