Rest Areas in Bibb and Monroe Counties Close for Renovations

The rest areas located on Interstate 75 southbound in Monroe and Interstate 475 northbound in Bibb will close for renovations Monday, January 29 for a maximum of 150 days. Motorists will have no access to the rest areas driveways, parking areas or buildings during this renovation and beautification time. Signs will soon be up informing visitors of the scheduled closures.
Remodeling and renovation of both rest areas will include parking lot repair, drainage repair, parking lot re-striping, repair existing sidewalks, landscaping, ADA paths of travel upgrades, picnic canopy repair, roof and gutter replacement, replacement of HVAC systems, repair and/or replacement of all exterior and interior lighting with LED lighting, installation of occupancy sensors to lighting in restrooms, replacement of existing toilet fixtures with automatic flush valves, replacement of floor tile in all areas, replacement of counters, mirrors and electric hand dryers, repair and repainting of all walls and ceilings .
These major renovations were awarded to Headley Construction Corporation at a construction cost of $3,085,000 and are expected to be completed by June 28, 2018.
Funds for the renovation and beautification of the Georgia welcome centers and rest areas come from revenues collected from the Georgia LOGO program. The Georgia LOGO program offers businesses advertising along highway interchanges through placement of names and logos on signs approaching exits. It generates approximately $3.3 million annually.
