Georgia Military College Opens 15th Campus in Zebulon
Wednesday, January 17th, 2018
Georgia Military College is excited to announce the opening of our new college campus in Zebulon, Georgia. Thursday, January 11, GMC hosted a ribbon cutting at the new campus located at 7818 Highway 19 South, Zebulon, GA 30295.
Classes start in March at the new campus but GMC Zebulon already has its first student, Rochelle Smith. She says she wants to show her 15 year-old son that you can do anything you put your mind to.
“2018 is going to be a better year for me, a better way to better myself to come back to school and do something,” Smith said. “I’m just excited to be here and I can’t wait to get started.”
Brigadier General Rock Donahue, Executive Director of GMC’s Fayetteville, Fairburn, Stone Mountain and Zebulon Campuses, provided welcome remarks and facilitated the ribbon cutting ceremony, followed by an invocation from Chaplain Kenneth Koon of Armed Forces Mission. Zebulon’s Mayor, Bobby Blalock, shared remarks, as well as Lt. Gen. William B. Caldwell, IV, President of GMC, Bill Taylor of WKEU Radio in Griffin, along with Latonya Holmes, the new Extension Center Director for GMC Zebulon.
The addition of Georgia Military College Zebulon Campus makes 15 GMC campuses in Georgia! This is an exciting opportunity for GMC, and Mayor Blalock says, for the Zebulon community as well.
“This is, to me, the most important thing to happen in Zebulon since I’ve been living here for 25 years,” Blalock said. “Zebulon needed a college. This is going to be so convenient and so good for our students.”
Georgia Military College Zebulon campus plans to enroll 20 students this upcoming quarter in March, and then a total of 50 in the fall quarter. Holmes says her goal is to increase those numbers.
“Meet the students, get out in the community, and just be involved and grow this center,” Holmes said. “I want to outgrow the space before the year is over.”
GMC Zebulon is an extension of GMC’s Fayetteville campus and is located in Pike County adjacent to the Zebulon City Hall building, vicinity Zebulon City Park.
Open for postsecondary classes in March, this campus offers GMC students in Pike and surrounding counties the opportunity to complete classes toward and Associate Degree. Many of the classes completed at Georgia Military College can be transferred to a four year college or university. Brigadier General Donahue says starting with a solid foundation is key.
“You’ve got to have a firm foundation, and I think GMC provides that, educating citizens who then become contributing members of our society. I love that our motto is you ‘start here… go anywhere,’” BG Donahue said.
GMC Zebulon is a project that many in the community also helped bring to the area. Bill Taylor, Owner of WKEU Radio in Griffin, Representative Johnnie Caldwell, Jr., and Mayor Blalock, all played a key role in making GMC Zebulon a reality. Also in attendance at the ribbon cutting was Brigadier General Curt Rahut, Executive Vice President of GMC, Dr. Mike Holmes, Vice President of Academic Affairs at GMC, Mark Strom, GMC Senior Vice President, Jim Watkins, Vice President of Business Affairs, and many others from the Zebulon and Pike County communities.
