Middle Georgia State University is now offering in-state tuition to prospective students from bordering states who take classes on the Cochran Campus.
The Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia approved the move, which takes effect immediately, at its November meeting. Middle Georgia State asked to be able to offer in-state tuition to prospective students living in Alabama, Florida, South Carolina, and Tennessee.
Earlier this year, the Regents authorized MGA to charge in-state tuition for Alabama, Florida, and South Carolina residents enrolled in its Aviation programs, based on the Eastman Campus. (Tennessee was recently added.) The latest out-of-state tuition waiver is specifically for students from all four states who take their courses on Middle Georgia State's Cochran Campus.
Most of the 13 University System of Georgia institutions that grant in-state tuition to residents of border states are south of the Fall Line. With the Eastman Campus already approved for the out-of-state tuition waiver, the move by MGA to add the Cochran Campus to the list puts the University's two southernmost campuses in line with the other institutions.
Among other scenarios, the move would allow the spouse or sibling of an out-of-state student relocating to Eastman to study at the School of Aviation to pursue a different degree at nearby Cochran and pay in-state tuition.
"It gives us some flexibility in our admissions strategies as well as provides creative options for prospective students who live in border states," said Margo Woodham, director of Admissions for MGA. "We appreciate the Regents allowing this opportunity."
MGA's In-state tuition for a full-course load is currently $1,663 per semester. Out-of-state tuition is $4,480.
Situated near the town center of Cochran, the historic Cochran Campus in Bleckley County is noted for its beauty, characterized by a traditional quad and stately oaks. The campus covers about 182 acres and includes a scenic lake. Student housing is available on the Cochran Campus, where Middle Georgia State's intercollegiate athletic program is based. The Cochran Campus is home to the Georgia Academy for Math, Engineering and Sciences, a residential dual-enrollment program for highly motivated high school students.
