Coliseum Northside Hospital is now offering robotic surgery using the daVinci Robotic System. On Tuesday, November 14, Joshua Perkel, M.D. performed the first robotic surgery on the equipment.
Robotic surgery is performed through a few small incisions by a surgeon who is seated at an ergonomically designed console. The view of the surgical field is transmitted in 3D HD vision through a camera that is inserted into one of the tiny incisions. The 3D HD view gives surgeons a picture of the field that they otherwise would not have if they were performing traditional surgery.  The robot also features instruments designed with seven degrees of motion – a range of motion greater than the human wrist. The enhanced view of the field coupled with the dexterous, delicate instruments allow for a shorter recovery time, less tissue damage, less post-operative pain and less risk of infection

“Robotic surgery offers a minimally invasive approach with greater precision, offering patients a surgical option with less pain and a quicker recovery”, said Dr. Perkel. “I have performed minimally invasive, robotic surgery for over 10 years and am excited to see Coliseum Northside Hospital offers this as an option for their patients who need surgical care.”

Coliseum Northside Hospital currently has general surgeons and urologists on staff credentialed to perform robotic surgery and plans to add additional surgical specialties in the future.

Robotic surgery has been an option in Macon since 2009 when Coliseum Medical Centers became the first hospital in Macon to perform gynecological surgery, oncological surgery, and colorectal surgery using this device.
