Georgia Military College is proud to announce its newest addition of a Women’s Golf Team to its intercollegiate athletics department. Recruitment will begin immediately for 10 women golfers for the Fall of 2018. As with the men’s program, GMC will also look to recruit a contingent of international athletes. GMC’s Women’s Golf Team will join the National Junior College Athletic Association’s Division II program. GMC’s Athletic Director, Bert Williams, says this is an exciting opportunity for GMC students.
“I am excited to get the institutional approval to bring on a women’s golf program,” said Bert Williams, GMC’s Athletic Director. “We have been highly successful with our men’s program winning two national championships and we firmly believe we can bring this program on in a manner to have it be successful very quickly. Our fantastic indoor golf lab, our relationships with the Club at Lake Sinclair and with several courses at Lake Oconee, on top of a second to none institution and city provide us an incredible situation to recruit for this program. Women’s Golf will be a tremendous addition to what we offer in our intercollegiate athletics department at Georgia Military College.”
The Women’s Golf team will practice in GMC’s state-of-the-art indoor training facility known as The Mason Golf Performance Lab which opened in September of 2016 through the generous contributions of Harold and Brenda Mason. The Mason Golf Performance Lab includes a fullswing golf simulator, 1,000 square foot chipping and putting complex, a team room, and study lounge. They’ll also have access to several other local courses such as The Club at Sinclair, Reynolds on Lake Oconee Golf Courses, Harbor Club at Lake Oconee, and The Kingdom-Taylor Made Improvement Center.
The President of GMC, LtGen Caldwell said, "We are very excited to add Women's Golf to our athletic family. We have studied this possibility for a few years now, and are ready to make it a reality. Our Women’s Golf program will greatly enhance the opportunities we provide in athletics, especially to women athletes."
GMC offers an affordable, accessible and supportive environment for its student athletes to succeed both on and off the golf course. Members of the Women’s Golf team will also be able to compete for
athletic scholarships. GMC’s Board of Trustees Chairman, Mr. Randy New, says the addition of Women’s Golf will take the game to new heights.
“It’s a great day in the junior college athletics program at GMC and I’m very proud to be a part of it,” said Mr. Randy New, GMC’s Board of Trustees Chairman. “The opportunity to offer Women’s Golf is going to allow a lot of young ladies the opportunity to move the game to a higher level. GMC’s Men’s Golf program has been wildly successful in part to our good coaches and the support of Harold and Brenda Mason. I’m looking forward to the success of Women’s Golf.”
