Staff Report From Middle Georgia CEO

The Auxilians of Houston Healthcare are dedicated to the health care of our community. These volunteers, located at various facilities throughout the System, donate their time, energy, and effort to make our health care System thrive.

Over 200 Auxilians volunteer their time and share their talents to assist our staff, patients, and visitors. The Auxiliary members work in clinical and non-clinical areas, offering help wherever it is needed. During 2016, this group donated more than 34,000 hours to the System. Houston Healthcare is fortunate to have such a large group of Auxilians committed to helping us accomplish our mission.

Each year, the Houston Medical Center and Perry Hospital Auxilians donate money back to the hospitals to purchase items that benefit patient care and enhance the overall patient experience. They are able to raise money through a variety of fundraisers along with sales from the gift shops – The Gift Connection at Houston Medical Center and the Pink Bowtique located in Perry Hospital. They are also proud to support the Houston County Volunteer Medical Clinic. Since the Clinic opened in 2004, the Auxilians have donated nearly $150,000 in support of its mission to provide primary, non-emergency medical care to working uninsured residents of Houston County.

“The number of hours this group contributes is phenomenal. The items they have purchased and donations they have made help make Houston Healthcare stronger,” says Charles Briscoe, VP and Chief Operating Officer for Houston Healthcare. “However, those pale in comparison to what they do every day—being there every day, the smiles and help they give to our patients and visitors. Our Auxiliary members serve as role models, and we are a better organization for the contributions they make each and every day.”

The Volunteen and Chaplaincy Program are also coordinated through the Volunteer Services Department. Volunteens are young teens to early adults who volunteer and are able to learn the different aspects of healthcare by working in various hospital departments. This program is a wonderful way for these young adults to see how the numerous departments work together so the entire hospital runs more smoothly. The Chaplains are here to assist patients and family members, as well as staff members and physicians.

“Each year we host an appreciation luncheon for our volunteers, chaplains and volunteens,” shares Melissa Phagan, Director of Volunteer Services for Houston Healthcare. “They give so much of themselves through their time and constant support, and this is just one small way we can say thank you for all they do. Each one is a true asset to our organization, and we are grateful for all of them.”
