Rosa Jackson Community Center Grand Reopening Today

Staff Report From Middle Georgia CEO

Friday, February 17th, 2017

Macon-Bibb County and the East Macon community will celebrate the Grand Reopening of the Rosa Jackson Community Center (1211 Maynard Street) and dedication of the Walter E. Davis, Sr. Plaza on Friday, February 17, at 10:30 a.m. In addition to celebrating the reopening of the Center, Macon-Bibb County Parks and Recreation staff will be inviting the community to a family fun day on Saturday, February 18.

The Center has been closed since January 2016 so it could undergo a significant improvement project, including: a new gymnasium, an exercise/workout room, a splash pad, a new playground, and extensive renovations to the existing facility, including a new computer room, new meeting spaces, warming kitchen, and more. The project was funded primarily with $3.8 million from the voter-approved Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax.

Additionally, $150,000 in blight bond funds were used to create the new Park Plaza. Previously to this round of improvements, other upgrades were made, including air conditioning, lighting, and a new roof for the original gym. The total project between SPLOST phases and the blight funds has been $4.5 million.

In January 2016, a groundbreaking was held to celebrate the start of construction, and you can  hear what the construction team, head of the Recreation Department, and Commission said then about the project and its impact on the neighborhood by watching this MaconBibbTV feature.
