Staff Report From Middle Georgia CEO
Thursday, September 15th, 2016
Coliseum Medical Centers is now offering three-dimensional mammography, also known as digital mammography with tomosynthesis. 3D mammography is the latest technology in breast mammography. X-ray machines are used to take pictures of thin slices of the breast from different angles and computer software is used to reconstruct an image.
Coliseum Medical Centers is the first in Middle Georgia to offer 3D mammography, performing the first 3D mammograms on Tuesday, September 13, 2016.
“We are pleased to be working with GE Healthcare to provide women with a precise screening tool available to help detect breast cancer,” said Christopher Minette, MD, radiologist on staff at Coliseum Medical Centers. “When cancer is identified and treated earlier, we know women have a better rate of survival. 3D mammography will offer our patients a new solution to help clinicians better detect breast cancer.”
Multiple studies have reported that 3D mammography significantly increases breast cancer detection, with a more than 40% increase in detection of invasive cancers. 3D mammography also offers clearer images and decreases the number of unnecessary biopsies, minimizing patient anxiety and unnecessary costs.
3D Mammography is recommended for patients undergoing breast screening.
Anyone can request a 3D screening mammogram and no doctor’s order is necessary. Depending on insurance coverage, additional fees may apply for 3D mammography.
