CGTC Celebrates Adult Education and Family Literacy Week
Staff Report From Middle Georgia CEO
Monday, September 12th, 2016
Following a proclamation made by Gov. Nathan Deal in August, Central Georgia Technical College is standing with the state in bringing awareness and effective resolution to Adult Education and Family Literacy issues.
According to the proclamation, roughly 1.1 million adults over the age of 18 have not completed high school or GED requirements; with high illiteracy rates being closely associated with crime and unemployment, it can perpetuate a generational cycle of family illiteracy. Considered a social problem in America, the week fights for illiteracy awareness and celebrates the literacy programs developing state and nationwide.
Adult education and literacy initiatives are an essential mission of CGTC. Through the Adult Education Program, transitioning and working adults gain a foundation of knowledge for the skills needed to complete workforce program certificates, pass college entrance exams, and fulfill GED diploma requirements.
CGTC routinely promotes the benefits and success of a continual pursuit of education. On Saturday, September 17, 2016, the CGTC Foundation will host the 7th Annual Race for Education 5K and 1-Mile Fun Run at the College’s Warner Robins Campus located at 80 Cohen Walker Drive. The Race for Education is a fundraiser supporting Adult Education programs at CGTC, including health and family literacy programs, ESL programs, and GED scholarships.
The Race for Education is held annually in September in celebration of National Literacy Month.
Dr. Wanda West, Adult Education project coordinator, recently appeared on 41Today in Macon to encourage participation in the Race for Education and discuss the Adult Education Program which she dubbed, a “stop and refocus point for getting back on track.”
