The Georgia Veteran’s Education Career Transition Resource Center, officially opened its doors Tuesday, in a ribbon-cutting ceremony hosted by Middle Georgia State University and Central Georgia Technical College.

Under a collaborative effort of the University System of Georgia and the Technical College System of Georgia, MGA and CGTC have partnered to provide training and transition services to servicemen and servicewomen moving into the civilian workforce.

Both institutions offer academic courses and workforce training at the Center.

CGTC will provide a variety of general education and commercial truck driving courses for the Fall 2016 semester. Dann Webb, executive director for Military and Veteran Services, serves as the College’s on-site point of contact for advisement and registration.

Gretchen Corbin, commissioner of TCSG said CGTC plays a vital role in the Systems’ workforce development initiatives and service to veterans. CGTC makes one of 22 institutions that served 8,100 military personnel during the 2015-2106 academic year.

“When they go out in the state we want them to know they will be taken care of in their educational needs,” Corbin said.

The Georgia Department of Veteran’s Services announced last week plans to relocate its Warner Robins Veteran’s Field Service into the Center, joining with the two institutions, and the Georgia Department of Labor under one roof to provide what is being labeled as a “one-stop-shop” for veterans.

The University System and Technical College System of Georgia broke ground on the 32,000 square foot facility in 2014, with construction beginning the following year. The Center is a $10 million state-funded, technologically advanced facility equipped with 10 classroom spaces to fulfill the post-secondary academic needs of transitioning servicemen and servicewomen.

Georgia VECTR’s opening strengthens Governor Nathan Deal’s Complete College Georgia Initiative, which has a goal of increasing the percentage of Georgians completing some level of college from 42 percent to 60 percent by 2020. Active and veteran military personnel represent a key audience for the initiative.

The Georgia VECTR Center is located at 1001 Armed Forces Boulevard in Warner Robins.
