Friday, April 22nd, 2016

The community is invited to join us for the 11th Annual Al Lucas Memorial Scholarship Awards Ceremony on Wednesday, April 27th at 5:30pm at the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame.  A $25 donation is suggested.  A highlight video of Al Lucas’s recent induction into the Troy State University Hall of Fame will be shown, and Dr. Curtis Jones, Bibb County School District Superintendent, will deliver the keynote address to inspire the young athletes.

The following seven students from Bibb County will be honored with a $1,000 college scholarship.

Christina Smith — Westside High School
Ikeia Moore — Central High School
Alyssa Jackson — Rutland High School
Takeyma Duhart — Southwest High School
Alexis Mitchell — Northeast High School
Ta’Mario Tufts — Northeast High School
Garrett King — Howard High School

The Lucas Family established the Al Lucas Memorial Scholarship Fund in 2005 at the Community Foundation of Central Georgia to perpetuate the legacy of Al Lucas, who died in 2005 while making a tackle during an Arena Football League game.  Al was a Macon native and extraordinary athlete who graduated from Northeast High School and played for the Los Angeles Avengers.

The scholarship in his memory is open to student athletes graduating from any Bibb County public high school with athletic programs, and his widow, De’Shonda Lucas, says it is a fitting tribute because “Al’s concern for young people will continue over the years to touch an ever-widening circle of young lives.”   The fund has awarded $83,000 in scholarships to scholar athletes from Bibb County Public Schools, and the average GPA of the recipients is a 3.6 GPA.
