Job Corps Working to Help Local Students with Education & Career Goals

Staff Report From Middle Georgia CEO

Monday, March 28th, 2016

Job Corps offers students an opportunity to realign themselves with their educational and career goals. They offer qualifying students the chance to earn a GED or HSD, while receiving vocational training in one of over 100 career fields; all at no cost to them. They do this by immersing students in a hands-on, self paced, learning environment. Students can spend up to 2 years on one of our residential campuses, where they can achieve the necessary training and education while preparing to move on to the military, college or the workplace. While on the Job Corps center, students will be provided with no-cost meals, basic medical/ dental care and uniforms. Upon completion, students can be eligible to receive up to $1000 in transitional assistance, as well as up to 21 months of local job placement services.

The goal for this area is to target young men and women who are facing the “What’s next?” scenario. Job Corps has been, and will always be, established in our communities for individuals who have been unable to complete the traditional path to basic education. They want to make sure that community groups, parents and students are aware that our service is very valuable to individuals who may need more guidance in developing their path to the military, workplace or higher education. Each year, they assist thousands of students in their education and vocational training, while ensuring that their medical and residential needs are met.

The requirements of the program are that the students demonstrate a need for the service and that they are able to live and work in a diverse residential environment. Students between the ages of 16 and 24 are eligible, as long as they are able to meet our financial guidelines. Adult students and parents of juveniles must fall at or below the current poverty guidelines.  Those who receive SNAP (food stamps), TANF, Suplemental Social Security payments and unemployment insurance  automatically qualify.
