Applications are now being accepted from high school and college students for more than $80,000 in scholarships which will be awarded by Flint Energies and the Flint Energies Foundation this spring. Scholarships will be available in three areas: GED, technical college, and college or university. Students can be entering technical college or college for the first time, or continuing their education, according to Sr. Vice President Jimmy Autry.

“Flint’s scholarship program was founded to help our local students further their education at any accredited school of their choice – in or out of state,” said Autry. “The Flint Energies Foundation Scholarship is limited to students whose primary residence is within one of the 17 counties served by Flint Energies:  Bibb, Chattahoochee, Crawford, Dooly, Harris, Houston, Macon, Marion, Monroe, Muscogee, Peach, Schley, Sumter, Talbot, Taylor, Twiggs and Upson.
Twenty-two scholarships, (apply here) worth $1,000 each, will be awarded to students pursuing a technical college degree. Ten scholarships, (apply here) worth $2,500 each, will be awarded to students pursuing a degree at a four-year college or university.

Because this scholarships are only open to students living within 17 counties and because the Foundation will award at least 20 scholarships per year, applicants have a much greater chance of receiving one than in statewide or national programs, said Autry.

“Supporting quality education has always been a large part of our commitment to community. College costs continue to increase each year and we hope that this scholarship program will help local students achieve their dream of a college education,” says Marian McLemore, Manager of Public Relations at Flint Energies.

Students pursuing a GED will be able to apply for funds through local technical colleges that serve the Flint Energies area. Up to 100 students can receive this scholarship.

Touchstone Energy cooperatives like Flint are committed to providing service to their members with accountability, integrity, innovation and commitment to community. Scholarship applicants are required to complete an application which includes four short essays, explaining how they demonstrate these core values in their lives. A panel of retired educators will judge these essays blindly, and those scores – coupled with the students’ grade-point averages, community involvement and financial need – will determine the winners.
