Morgan Jarvis, a teacher from Howard High School, was named the 2016 Bibb County Teacher of the Year during the annual banquet celebrating all Bibb County School District 2015-2016 Teachers of the Year on Tuesday, October 27, at Mercer University.
Mr. Jarvis has taught in the Bibb County School District at Howard High School since 2011. He teaches Business and Computer Science for all high school levels. Mr. Jarvis taught in Baldwin County before joining Bibb. He graduated from Valdosta State University with a Bachelor of Science in Education.
“We must remember: We do this for the kids,” Mr. Jarvis said in his application. “Teaching is not about me, it is not about you, it is not about us. Teaching is about the students who will be in our classrooms on the first day of school in August. Teaching is about the young student who wants to be the first in his or her family to go to college.”
As Bibb County Teacher of the Year, Mr. Jarvis will now compete for the title of 2017 Georgia Teacher of the Year. Other finalists for Bibb County Teacher of the Year were Jennifer McMahan of Alexander II Magnet School, Elda Bryan of Burdell-Hunt Magnet School, Meagin Miller of Springdale Elementary School and Keturah Reese of Westside High School.
Mrs. Bryan was named runner-up for Bibb County Teacher of the Year. She has been with the Bibb County School District since 2007. She teaches Spanish to all grade levels at Burdell-Hunt. She began her teaching career in 1991 as an English teacher in Bluefields, Nicaragua. Mrs. Bryan earned her undergraduate degree in Business Administration with a minor in Spanish and went on to earn her master’s degree in Finance from Bluefields Indian and Caribbean University.
