Wednesday, September 16th, 2015

Macon Film Guild, Macon Film Festival, Bragg Jam and The Douglass Theatre are partnering to present a screening of the music documentary AMY on Tuesday, October 20 at The Douglass Theatre, 355 MLK, Jr Blvd. The screening will begin at 7:30pm. Join us for a pre-screening mixer in the Annex from 6-7pm. Admission is $5.00 and is open to the public.

From award-winning director Asif Kapadia, AMY tells the incredible story of six-time Grammy-winner Amy Winehouse – in her own words. Featuring extensive unseen archive footage and previously unheard tracks, this strikingly modern, moving and vital film shines a light on the world we live in.

A once-in-a-generation talent, Amy Winehouse was a musician that captured the world’s attention. A pure jazz artist in the most authentic sense, Amy poured her heart and soul into her music, expressing personal struggles and pain through her intimate lyrics. The combination of her raw honesty and virtuosity resulted in some of the most unique and adored songs of our time.

Winehouse became an international sensation, experiencing a meteoric rise to fame she had never expected. The relentless and invasive media attention, coupled with Amy’s troubled relationships and addictions, led her into a tragic cycle of self-destruction, resulting in her untimely death at age 27.

Macon Film Guild president, Camp Bacon said, “AMY is a significant film paralleling the interests of the Guild, the Macon Film Festival and Bragg Jam. As these organizations enthusiastically and successfully provide cultural events from music to film independent films for their middle Georgia audience, it makes good sense that these three organizations would work in partnership to promote AMY.”

“In keeping with the film festival's tradition of celebrating the art of music in film we are excited to be again partnering with the Macon Film Guild to spotlight this powerful and intimate music documentary,” said Macon Film Festival programmer Tabitha Walker. “We have the opportunity to screen this 2015 Cannes Film Festival official selection so soon after its theatrical release thanks in part to the new digital projection system at the Douglass Theatre. The film festival looks forward to future opportunities to continue to showcase the latest in independent film throughout the year in partnership with our friends at the Guild.”

Everett Verner, President of Bragg Jam said, “Continuing the partnership with the Macon Film Festival and Macon Film Guild, Bragg Jam is thrilled to co-host the AMY screening. As a fan of her music as well as the filmmakers behind Senna, we expect this to be a very special evening and film.”

“The Douglass is excited about this upcoming special screening,” said Gina Ward, Executive Director of the Douglass Theatre. “It brings together three of Macon’s cultural organizations under one roof to advance the enjoyment of cinema.  Since we recently installed our new digital equipment, the Douglass continues to be the perfect venue for downtown movie screenings.”
