Central Georgia Technical College held a ribbon cutting and open house for its new GED Testing Center, Thursday, September 3 at its Milledgeville Campus. The activities followed a reading of the proclamation by Milledgeville Mayor Gary Thrower recognizing Adult Education and Family Literacy Week in Milledgeville and the State, September 7-11. Baldwin County’s Certified Literate Community Program, Communities in Schools, hosted the proclamation reading. Governor Nathan Deal issued the original proclamation designating the week to raise awareness of Adult Literacy programs, and also identifying September 8 as Literacy Day in Georgia.
The new GED Testing Center at CGTC’s Milledgeville Campus is a first for Baldwin County and is available for anyone seeking to improve their education by obtaining a GED. The Center was certified through Pearson VUE to offer remote GED testing.
“We’re very excited to have this Center at our Milledgeville location,” said Sallie Devero, CGTC’s Assistant Vice President for Adult Education. “Transportation can sometimes be an issue for our students, so the proximity of this Center will be a great help.”
The GED test is made of four parts: reasoning through language arts, mathematical reasoning, science, and social studies. Cost for the test is $40 per section, for a total of $160. CGTC offers free test preparation classes. Students who are enrolled in the courses are eligible for scholarship opportunities to cover the costs of the exam.
Qualifying students can also take advantage of CGTC’s Accelerating Opportunities program. AO allows students to attend GED preparation classes and take credit courses simultaneously to work toward receiving both a GED and a technical certificate of credit. After earning their GED, students can easily transition into academic courses at CGTC to continue working toward a diploma or an associate degree.
The Adult Education program at Central Georgia Technical College served 3,210 students and graduated 310 students with a GED diploma in Fiscal Year 2015. CGTC’s Adult Education services are available in 12 counties in middle Georgia, with campuses in Baldwin, Bibb and Houston counties and learning centers in Crawford, Dooly, Jones, Macon, Monroe, Peach, Pulaski, Putnam and Twiggs counties.
CGTC is an official General Educational Development Testing Center and a site for computer-based GED Testing in partnership with Pearson VUE and the Technical College System of Georgia. The mission of CGTC’s Adult Education program is to enable every adult learner in the service delivery area to acquire the necessary basic skills to be able to compete successfully in today’s workplace, strengthen family foundations, and exercise full citizenship.
