Amerson River Park Open Five Days a Week

Staff Report From Middle Georgia CEO

Tuesday, July 7th, 2015

Beginning Friday, July 3, the newly upgraded Amerson River Park will be open Wednesday – Sunday from 8:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m. The Park will be closed on Mondays and Tuesdays so crews from the Parks & Beautification Department can mow the grass, pick up litter, empty trashcans, and perform routine maintenance. (The Overlook will remain closed as the contractors wait on delivery of the stone; a fence is being built around it to keep people out.)

With the help of a federal earmark grant ($5.5 million) provided to Macon-Bibb County, the Park was shut down for 15 months to make significant improvements, including two new picnic pavilions, upgrades to the Porter Pavilion area, a scenic river overlook, bathrooms at the playground, 3.5 miles of paved trails, .75 miles of mulch trails, a grand entrance, a new canoe takeout, and more.

The project was celebrated with a day of activities on May 30, and an estimated 3,000 people attended over the course of the day. Since then, the Park has only been open on Saturdays and Sundays, and there have been more than 600 cars entering the Park every day it’s been open.

Improving Amerson River Park is a project specifically listed in the Quality of Life Focus Area in Macon-Bibb County’s first Forward Together Strategic Plan. The long-term plan for this area is to have the paths connect across the river to the Ocmulgee Heritage Trail and to the Ocmulgee National Monument. Projects in this Focus Area are meant to “support, encourage, and promote good-living in Macon-Bibb with arts and cultural events, tourism improvements, social and night life opportunities, and a community-wide system of passive and active recreation.”
