Health Department Hosts Canned Fruit & Vegetable Drive
Press release from the issuing company
Monday, April 6th, 2015
During the first full week of April each year, communities across the U.S. observe National Public Health Week as a time to recognize the contributions of public health and highlight issues important to improving our communities and nation.
The Macon-Bibb County Health Department (MBCHD) invites the community to celebrate Public Health Week with a canned fruits and vegetables drive. The beneficiary is The Macon Rescue Mission. Cans may be dropped off at the MBCHD, 171 Emery Highway, between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. April 6-10.
The emphasis on canned fruits and vegetables is based on the scientific research showing that fruits and vegetables are critical to promoting good health. While the popular slogan "Five a Day" (eat five servings of fruits and/or vegetables daily) remains valuable, it is now known that even more is better.
The MBCHD encourages everyone to increase their daily consumption of fruits and vegetables; and to donate five or more cans of fruits and/or vegetables to our drive so that those with limited resources in our community do not have to compromise sound nutrition.
