More than 160 students from six Middle Georgia high schools are scheduled to compete in the World Language Day and Competition to be held Friday, Nov. 14, at Middle Georgia State College’s campus in Macon.

There will be dancing, singing and playing of instruments – in addition to a poster competition, a poetry contest and video commercial competition. Students in the competition are coming from Bibb, Houston, Laurens and Bleckley county high schools.

The event, which will be held in the Arts Complex/Theater building, begins at 9 a.m. and lasts until 1:30 p.m., but media interested in attending may choose to come about 11:15 a.m. for the poetry contest and the cultural entertainment -- dancing, singing and instrumental performance. The awards ceremony is scheduled for 1:10 p.m.

This is a foreign language competition in which students enter one or more of the following categories:

  • Poster competition, related to a world culture.
  • Creative poetry contest, in which students were asked to write a poem in French or Spanish.
  • Video commercial, in which students were asked to make a 1 to 2 minute video commercial on a French or Spanish product or service.

The event will have winners and runners-up for each category and level within a category. The students benefit from the competition by meeting other students who are learning a language and watching fun competitions.
