Staff members from Central Georgia Rehabilitation Hospital (CGRH) will take part in the “Ice Bucket Challenge” in order to raise awareness for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. The chilly event will take place on Friday, August 22 at 9:30 a.m. at CGRH, 3351 Northside Drive in Macon.

“We were challenged by the ALS Association of Atlanta, and we have no problem taking the challenge in order to raise awareness for this disease, The challenge is on!” said Jeanette Barker, Business Development Representative for CGRH.

In addition to taking the Ice Bucket Challenge, CGRH staff will make a contribution to ALS research. Light refreshments will also be served.

ALS is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that attacks nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord.

CGRH hospital hosts a monthly ALS clinic in order to help patients combat the effects of this disease. Participants are able to address mobility, respiratory and speech issues as well as symptom management through the clinic. They also receive nutrition; communication; caregiver support; end-of-life issues; and legal and financial issues.

A viral movement, the Ice Bucket Challenge (#icebucketchallenge) is designed to raise awareness for ALS. Participants pour buckets of freezing water over their heads, then challenge others to do the same. Through social media platforms such as Youtube, Facebook and Twitter, average people have challenged professional athletes, politicians and other public figures to join the fight against ALS. Ethel Kennedy challenged President Barack Obama, who chose to make a donation to the ALS Association instead of receiving a bucket of ice poured over his head. The President is not the only one – according to reports, donations have been pouring into the national ALS Association as well as local chapters.
