As part of National County Government Month, Macon-Bibb County is proud to launch “Bibb’s Backbone,” a campaign that shines a light on the members of Team Macon-Bibb who work hard every day to serve our community, especially those whose efforts happen behind the scenes and don’t always get noticed.

We’re continuing the campaign by highlighting our Economic & Community Development Department (ECD). From helping families stay housed to improving neighborhood infrastructure, this department plays a vital role in strengthening Macon-Bibb from the ground up.

is why I wanted to start this campaign,” said Emily Hopkins, Digital Content Specialist and interviewer for Bibb’s Backbone. “There’s so much that goes on behind the scenes that people don’t know about. The Economic and Community Development team is doing powerful, meaningful work, and it deserves to be seen and celebrated.”

The Department is made up of dedicated professionals who manage federal funds, connect residents with critical resources, and help local organizations carry out programs that directly impact quality of life. Among the team are Director Wanzina Jackson, Assistant Director Charlotte Woody, and Redevelopment Manager Ken Braden, along with other committed staff who work daily to serve the people of Macon-Bibb.

It manages several critical programs through funding from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), including:

  • Emergency Solutions Grant (ESG): Supports agencies that help individuals and families experiencing or at risk of homelessness with prevention services and rapid rehousing support.

  • Roof Your House Program: Provides up to $7,500 for eligible homeowners to make vital roof repairs, improving safety and preserving homeownership.

These funds are allocated based on population and poverty levels and can only be used within Macon-Bibb County to ensure a direct and measurable impact in the local community.

“Being able to assist individuals who otherwise may not have that assistance… it’s a nice feeling, it’s a good feeling, and it actually makes a difference in our community,” said Charlotte Woody, Assistant Director.

Macon-Bibb County is proud to recognize the Economic and Community Development Department for its unwavering commitment to public service and community progress. They are truly part of Bibb’s Backbone.

The Bibb’s Backbone campaign will continue throughout the month, spotlighting more of the hardworking individuals who are the foundation of our local government. Follow along on our social media and website to meet more of the people who keep Macon-Bibb County moving.
