Piedmont Macon’s Graduate Medical Education Program Matches With 28 Resident Physicians

Staff Report From Georgia CEO

Monday, March 24th, 2025

Piedmont Macon Medical Center will welcome 28 resident physicians this summer, the result of Match Week when candidates learn which hospital they have been matched with for their residencies.

The new residents are expected to join Piedmont Macon on July 1 in three residency programs – Internal Medicine, Psychiatry and Transitional Year. Match Week culminated Friday, March 21, with Match Day, when residents officially match with a hospital.

“We are thrilled to announce our new class of residents starting at Piedmont Macon in July,” said Jonathan Smith, M.D., the Designated Institutional Official for the Graduate Medical Education program at Piedmont Macon. “Match Day is always an exciting time for us as we welcome the newest members of our GME community, and we’re eager to help these residents as they take another step to becoming exceptional physicians.”

The Piedmont Macon residency program offers tracks of one to four years and has increased the number of doctors who serve Macon and the state of Georgia by retaining many of the residents who complete their medical training here. Of the 28 new residents, 13 are from Georgia, including three from Macon.

Although Piedmont Macon is a large 310-bed hospital, residents still are given the opportunity to receive one-on-one time with attending physicians and specialty coordinators. Piedmont Macon’s attending physicians typically take just one resident per rotation, giving those residents a good foundation and opportunity to grow in their field of study. Piedmont Macon also has a full-time scholarly activity coordinator who works one-on-one with residents on research and publication projects.
