Community Leaders Announce Support for SPLOST Renewal
Thursday, March 13th, 2025
Business and community leaders gathered today at the headquarters of the Macon-Bibb County Industrial Authority to demonstrate broad-based support for the renewal of the Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST). Organizations, including the Macon-Bibb Industrial Authority, the Greater Macon Chamber of Commerce and other key stakeholders joined together to urge residents to vote YES on March 18 to keep investing in Macon-Bibb’s future.
The renewal of the existing penny sales tax is projected to generate $450 million for critical infrastructure projects, including road and bridge repairs, airport expansion and public safety enhancements. With over 70% of SPLOST revenue coming from visitors and commuters, the measure allows Macon-Bibb to fund essential improvements without increasing property taxes.
“The renewal of SPLOST is essential to sustaining our community’s growth and ensuring Macon-Bibb remains an attractive place to live, work and do business,” said Jessica Walden, President and CEO of the Greater Macon Chamber of Commerce. “By continuing this investment, we strengthen our local economy, improve infrastructure and support public safety—all without adding new financial burdens on our residents.”
Robby Fountain, Board Chair of the Macon-Bibb Industrial Authority, emphasized the critical role SPLOST plays in economic development. “Since 2018, the Macon-Bibb County Industrial Authority (MBCIA) has helped secure $1.8 billion in private investment—a testament to the economic opportunities made possible by SPLOST. This initiative is pivotal for MBCIA and the sustained economic growth of Macon-Bibb County, directly contributing to job creation, workforce expansion and long-term prosperity for local industries and residents.”
Fountain continued, “Supporting the renewal of SPLOST is not just an investment in infrastructure—it is a commitment to fostering business growth, enhancing our economy and securing a stronger future for Macon. Upgraded infrastructure ensures efficient operations for existing businesses while attracting new enterprises, making Macon-Bibb a premier destination for investment.”
Key highlights of the SPLOST renewal include:
- Infrastructure Investments: Road and bridge repairs, improved sidewalks and additional street lighting.
- Airport Expansion: Enhancing Macon-Bibb’s airport to attract business and economic development.
- Public Safety Enhancements: Funding for law enforcement resources and safety improvements.
- Economic Growth: Strengthening job creation and supporting local businesses
Early voting for the SPLOST renewal will end on Friday, March 14, with Election Day set for Tuesday, March 18. Residents are encouraged to vote YES to keep Macon-Bibb moving forward.
