Thursday, October 12th, 2023
Mercer University Law School is celebrating its 150th anniversary with a downtown Macon event Friday, Oct. 13. Chief Justice of the Georgia Supreme Court Michael P. Boggs, Mercer LAW ’90, will be the keynote speaker at the celebration being held at The Grand Opera House on Mulberry Street. Former Gov. Nathan Deal, CLAS ’64, LAW ’66, will introduce Chief Justice Boggs.
For more than 150 years, Mercer Law School’s mission has been to provide a student-centered legal education that equips students with the knowledge, skills and values for admission to the profession and for law practice. A nationally recognized legal writing curriculum and a nationally-ranked advocacy program are two examples of Mercer Law’s commitment to develop critical thinking and empower students to cultivate a professional identity that includes living a life of meaning and satisfaction.
Dean Karen J. Sneddon said, “This event brings together the Mercer Law community to remember, to reflect and to rejoice. Over 150 years, Mercer Lawyers have been making a difference in communities throughout the State of Georgia, across the county, and around the world. Whether practicing in a rural community or metropolis, in private practice or public interest, Mercer Lawyers lead and inspire. We are delighted to be able to gather in celebration.”
Chief Justice Boggs was appointed to the Supreme Court of Georgia on Dec. 7, 2016, by Gov. Nathan Deal. He was re-elected state-wide in 2018. Previously, Chief Justice Boggs served in elective office as a Judge on the Court of Appeals of Georgia, as a Superior Court Judge for the Waycross Judicial Circuit, and as a member of the Georgia House of Representatives.
In 1990, he earned his Juris Doctor degree from Mercer School of Law, where he was a member of the Moot Court board and the ABA/Law School Division moot court competition team, was awarded membership in the Order of Barristers and as an undergraduate was elected to the Student Government Association and served as student body president.
The media is invited to attend the event and conduct interviews following the program.
