Capitol Theatre Undergoes Name and Brand Refresh

Staff Report

Wednesday, April 5th, 2023

As of April 1st, Macon's premiere live music venue is now known simply as Capitol Theatre. "We've enjoyed an excellent partnership with Hargray over the past five years and Cox Communications before that," says Moonhanger Group CEO Wes Griffith, "but we've decided to let the Capitol stand on its own again. Thanks to growing attendance and support of live music, The Capitol Theatre is ready to move forward without a naming rights sponsorship. I'd also like to recognize the Urban Development Authority, which stepped in at an integral time to stabilize the project and help it transition from a non-profit project to a privately own business."

The Capitol Theatre originally opened in downtown Macon in 1916 as a motion picture theatre.
It operated for 60 years until 1976, when it closed its doors for three decades. After an extensive
restoration project, it reopened in 2006 as the Cox Capitol Theatre, operating as a multi-purpose
entertainment venue. In 2013, Macon's Moonhanger Group entered into a long-term agreement
with the Urban Development Authority to manage and eventually purchase the property.

The Capitol Theatre features an open first floor plan with 273 balcony seats on the second floor
for a capacity of 682. The venue has become a favorite spot for touring and regional acts with
upcoming shows including: North Mississippi Allstars on 4/6; Tab Benoit on 4/13; and the annual
Jimmy Hall Birthday Bash on 4/22.

The updated logo is a nod to the iconic Capitol Theatre marquee. The new website
address will be capitoltheatremacon.com, which includes live music listings and private event
rental information. All booking inquiries should be directed to [email protected].
The Moonhanger Group is the parent company of the Capitol Theatre, The Rookery, Dovetail,
H&H, Grant's Lounge, Natalia's, Woodward Hotel and Quill Cocktail Bar. Griffith and Rob Evans
also operate Creek Media, which owns 100.9 The Creek (WNEX-FM) and operates Capricorn
Sound Studios and Museum in partnership with Mercer University.
