Macon Area Habitat for Humanity Celebrates Homeownership during Habitat Week 2022
Tuesday, October 4th, 2022
Macon Area Habitat for Humanity will host Habitat Week 2022 through a series of events from October 3-9, 2022. Macon Area Habitat for Humanity invites the Macon community to celebrate affordable homeownership through mortgage burnings, a ground blessing, a ReStore sale, and the Home Court Pickleball Tournament. For over 35 years, MAHFH has partnered with families to create access to safe, decent, and affordable housing in Macon-Bibb and Jones Counties. The affiliate will also celebrate Habitat for Humanity's international work with World Habitat Day on Monday, October 3.
“We invite everyone to join in celebrations around the world and reflect on the positive impact of homeownership on families, neighborhoods, and the entire community,” said Ivey Hall, Executive Director of Macon Area Habitat for Humanity. “During our mortgage burning and ground blessing ceremonies, we celebrate our homeowner's Habitat journey and their commitment to paying their mortgage forward through regular payments which continue blessing other families with future Habitat homes.”
Media are encouraged to join us for interviews during the following events:
Mortgage Burning on Tuesday, October 4 at 2:00pm at 690 Holt Avenue parking lot
Ground Blessing on Wednesday, October 5 at 4:00pm on Dannenberg Avenue
Home Court tournament on October 7-9 at the Tattnall Square Tennis and Pickleball Center
Monday, October 3 – World Habitat Day
The United Nations established World Habitat Day in 1985 to spotlight the need for adequate shelter worldwide. Every year Habitat for Humanity joins our partners around the world to rededicate ourselves to recognizing the fundamental right to adequate shelter. Habitat for Humanity asks everyone to join together as one global network in communicating that every one of us deserves the opportunity for a better future. A decent place to live can remove barriers to opportunity, health, and success that might have been part of a family’s life for years and, in many cases, for generations.
Tuesday, October 4 at 2:00pm – Mortgage Burning
Macon Area Habitat for Humanity will host a mortgage burning ceremony to celebrate 10 homeowners who have paid off their mortgages. These homeowners started their Habitat journey by dedicating their time through sweat equity to their homes and the homes of other new Habitat families. Their commitment to pay their mortgage allowed Macon Habitat to build more Habitat homes. Media are invited to attend the ceremony on Tuesday, October 4 at 690 Holt Avenue..
Wednesday, October 5, 4:00pm – Ground Blessing
Macon Area Habitat for Humanity, Mayor Lester Miller, and The Peyton Anderson Foundation will join together to bless the soil of Macon Habitat's new builds in Napier Heights. Macon Habitat will celebrate the start of construction for 3 homes made possible with the investment of Macon-Bibb County's American Rescue Plan Act Funding and a matching gift from The Peyton Anderson Foundation. Join us at 4 p.m on Dannenberg Avenue for the Ground Blessing. Parking is available at 690 Holt Avenue.
Thursday, October 6 – ReStore Sidewalk Sale
The Macon Area Habitat for Humanity ReStore provides a place for the community to donate building materials, furniture, and household items and a place to shop for great deals to help with home repairs and furnishings. Proceeds from the ReStore help fund Habitat’s mission to provide life-changing homeownership opportunities. The ReStore will hold a 20% off sale for select items including furniture, TVs, and exercise equipment on Thursday, October 6. The ReStore is open Tuesday-Friday from 10am-4pm, Saturday 9am-3pm, and is located at 690 Holt Avenue. In addition, there will be a sidewalk sale with amazing deals on power tools and woodworking machinery. All proceeds from the sidewalk sale will be contributed to our endowment fund so we can keep building homes for many years to come.
Friday, October 7-Sunday, October 9 – Home Court Tournament
The Home Court Pickleball Tournament will kick off at the Tattnall Square Tennis and Pickleball Center on Friday, October 7.
