Public Safety, Business and Community Leaders Unite to Support Macon-Bibb OLOST
Friday, October 29th, 2021
Today, public safety, business and community leaders stood together to support the Macon-Bibb OLOST. The Greater Macon Chamber of Commerce, the Macon Fraternal Order of Police and the Macon-Bibb Firefighters Association have all formally endorsed the OLOST, an additional one percent sales tax that will provide one of the largest property tax cuts in state history while supporting a $40 million dollar investment in local public safety.
“These leaders understand what’s at stake for our community,” said Macon-Bibb Mayor Lester Miller. “They’re here this morning because they know that this vote is our one opportunity to enact historic property tax relief for Macon-Bibb while supporting investment to make our community safer.”
The OLOST is a special penny sales tax that will provide a reliable monthly revenue stream for our local government while saving money for Macon-Bibb residents. Approximately 70 percent of the revenue from the OLOST will come from people who visit or work in Macon but live elsewhere.
“I am excited that our Board of Directors has voted to endorse the OLOST,” said Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Yvonne Williams. “Passage of the OLOST will provide critical support to Macon’s businesses and industries, while increasing our stability and prosperity by encouraging families to call Macon home and supporting essential investment in public safety. Our members and Board are united in support of an OLOST victory. Please join us in voting ‘YES’ for the OLOST on November 2nd.”
“We are excited to have the Greater Macon Chamber of Commerce, the Macon Fraternal Order of Police and the Macon-Bibb Firefighters Association as our partners in supporting this historic referendum,'' said Macon-Bibb Forward Together Committee Chair Katie Powers.
Macon-Bibb Forward Together is the local committee working to educate the public about the OLOST.
Early voting for the Special Election is underway now, and Election Day is Tuesday, November 2.
